 Horse race of H’Mong ethnic group in the “Village” at the early New Year

(LVH) - In the afternoon of February 15, 2014, in the framework of “Spring festival day all over the country” at Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism (Dong Mo, Son Tay, Hanoi), H’mong ethnic group’s horse race was held with the participation of 16 Bac Ha racing horses, Lao Cai. This is one of the unique culture aspects of H’mong ethnic group at Tay Bac highlands.

Mr. Ho Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Head of the Steering Committee, Ms. Hoang Thi Hanh, Deputy Head of the Northwest Steering Committee, Member of Steering Committee, Ms. Ha Thi Nga, Vice Chairman of Lo Cai Provincial People’s Committee of Lao Cai, Member of Steering Committee; Mr. Nguyen Dinh Loi, Deputy Head of Management Board of Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, Head of Organization Board; Mr. Tran Huu Son, Director of Lao Cai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Giang Seo Cau, Vice Chairman of People’s Committee of Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, the representatives of the leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the provinces along with ethnic groups, residents, visitors and reporters attended the horse race.

Speaking at the horse race, Mr. Tran Huu Son, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said “This is a traditional horse race of H’mong ethnic group, not only a sport but also the race of courage, resilience, reflecting martial spirit of people at the frontier”.

Especially, Bac Ha horse race still has rustic, primitive features such as no harness, pedal and controlling horses with braided rope, even manually.
The horse race consisted of three rounds: the first round was divided into 8 turns, each turn consisted of 2 jockeys with distance of 3 rounds, the best horse of each round would be selected, the next round consisted of 8 jockeys, was divided into 2 turns, each turn consisted of 4 jockeys with distance of 3 rounds, the first and second jockey would be selected for the next round; the final round consisted of 4 jockeys, which were winners in the previous rounds, competing with one other for the first, second, third and fourth with distance of 4 rounds.

The nearer the round was the final round, the more drastic and dramatic matches were. Especially, in the horse race, tourists could participate in many special indigenous artistic and cultural activities of H’Mong ethnic group such as blowing pan-pipe, antiphonal singing, umbrella dancing, spinning the top, etc. These are the beauties and special indigenous cultural values that leave unforgettable impressions in visitors’ mind when they visit “Common House” of 54 Vietnamese ethnic groups in “Spring festival all over the country”.

From the Organization Board’s point of view, the horse race of H’mong ethnic group in Lao Cai province take place in 02 days (from 02:00 a.m – 04:00 p.m on the 15th and 16th of February, 2014) at the racecourse, the central axis of Gate A, Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism. This is a valuable opportunity for visitors, who desire to experience the interesting and fierce racing rounds and learn unique cultural characteristics of H’mong ethnic group at the Village.
