Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism with the main ceremony of Chôl Chnăm Thmây Tet festival

(LVH) – On the morning of 15th April 2014, Chôl Chnăm Thmây Tet of Southern Khmer people with the main rituals occurred in accordance with the traditional rituals in the space of Khmer pagoda at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism.

The previous day (14th April), at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, Theravada Buddhist monks and two Acha, monks and nuns and Buddhists from all over the world organized the ritual of the first day (Chool sangkran) such as: The procession ceremony of Great Calendar and Four great heavenly Kings; offering rice and banking the sand mountain etc.

On the morning of 15th April, the Theravada Buddhists executed the main rituals: starting the Buddha procession ritual around the central chamber, followed by the ritual of Buddha bathing at the central chamber; finally the ritual of releasing animals and placing the bowls for offerings to Buddha. Then, there were the acts of performances for Tet celebration and enjoying the traditional dishes of Southern Khmer people.

This ceremony was attended by: Mr. Ho Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourist; Mr. Thet-U, the Ambassador of Myanmar in Vietnam and his wife; Mr. I-Van- A-Va-Sinh-Hơ, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Vietnam; Mrs. Danh Ut, Trieu Thi Nai, Vice Chairmen of Council of Ethnic Affairs of National Assembly of Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Deputy Head of Ethnic Affair Department, Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee; Mr. Duong Ngoc Tan, Deputy Head of Government’s Committee for Religious Affairs; Major-general Le Viet Anh, Deputy Political Commissar of Tran Quoc Tuan University.

In addition, there were the dignitaries of Vietnam Buddhist Church, Theravada Buddhism and Buddhists and foreign students from Laos, Cambodia and numerous visitors to attend.

Starting with the ritual of Buddha procession around the Central Chamber; Leading the Buddha statue procession was Venerable Thich Kim Tue, the Chairman of Khmer Pagoda of Village, followed by monks, delegates and Buddhists. The three round Buddha procession was the form of honor and respect to Buddha before entering the Buddha Chamber to chant and worship Three Refuges (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) with solemn things such as lamps, incense etc in order to pray for the progress, benefits and everlasting peace and happiness for children and fathers, mothers etc.

Then, the ritual of bathing Buddha was conducted in the Central Chamber. According to the concept, bathing Buddha is the noble work which should be done voluntarily to eliminate the bad things and bad thoughts in mind and wish the peace and happiness for everyone. The final ritual is to release animals and place bowls for offerings. The ceremony was ended with the acts of performances to welcome Tet and enjoy the traditional dishes of Khmer people.

Emphasizing on the organization of Chôl Chnăm Thmây Tet at the Vietnam National Village of Ethnic Culture and Tourism, Monk Thich Minh Thong, Acting chairman of Duc Hoa Pagoda (Duc Hoa Commune, Soc Son, Hanoi) gave speech that Khmer ethnic group was honored to have a pagoda bolded with several traditional cultural characters of Khmer people in Hanoi which was the place to exchange and enhance the unity of Vietnam Ethnic Groups and especially the pagoda in Village would always be a place to receive and exchange with Theravada Buddhists from other countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos. Mixed with the Tet celebration atmosphere of Khmer people across the country, the organization of Chôl Chnăm Thmây Tet in the space of Khmer pagoda, Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Groups and Tourism for the first time was a meaningful activity which contributed to the preservation of unique traditional characters of Southern Khmer people.
