The opening ceremony was attended by President Tran Dai Quang, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien, representatives of international orgranisations and Embassies of Cambodia, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines in Vietnam as well as a large number of local residents and visitors.

Speaking at the event, President Tran Dai Quang asserted that the Vietnamese Party and State always acknowledge culture as a vital part of the country’s revolutionary cause and the people’s spiritual life.

He quoted the Party Resolution which strives to turn culture into a solid spiritual foundation of the society, the inner strength to ensure the sustainable development and the firm protection of the country.

That the Government chose the April 19 to be the Vietnamese ethnic groups’ cultural day aimed to honour the cultural quintessence of 54 ethnic communities in Vietnam, consolidate the great national unity bloc while promoting patriotism and national pride among people, he stressed.

He called for all-round efforts to preserve and uphold the treasured cultural value of Vietnamese ethnic groups, promote the “unity in diversity” of Vietnam’s cultural identity, and increase cultural exchanges with the world in order to enrich the national culture.

He also emphasised the request to harmonise the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage with economic development and tourism stimulation.

He took the occasion to extend best wishes to Vietnamese ethnic communities across the country.

Under the theme ‘Convergence of thousands of quintessence’, the opening ceremony highlighted the indigenous cultural features of five areas across the country, including the northern mountainous region, the Red river delta, the central region, the Central Highlands, and the Southern region.

Visitors to the five-day event can taste the food and drink of ethnic groups, enjoy folklore art performances, join folk games and explore traditional festivals such as the fire dance festival and longevity celebration of the Dao people, in addition to the coming-of-age ritual of the E De people.

A seminar on promoting cultural values of Vietnamese ethnic groups and a national stick pushing competition are also scheduled on the occasion.
